CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

KAI

Only a couple days into the remodel of my kitchen, and it’s already getting old. At least I was able to sleep in my own bed last night, but tonight I'm back to the motel. I need to consider renting a house for the next six months while they finish doing the renovations.

I still can’t forget that girl. I’ve never had anyone affect me the way she did. Her beautifully sad face, it’s a face I won’t forget soon. Shit, I need to purge her from my thoughts. The last thing I need is another Ashley situation. Even now, almost three years later, I’m still gun shy.

The loan officer I’m meeting this morning across town is running late, which entails me arriving back to the office late. I hate being late to meetings, especially when I'm looking to hire an assistant for myself. I should have postponed it, but since I was almost here before he called to let me know he was running late, I might as well stay. While waiting, I call Liz informing her that I will be running late and to stall until I can get back to the office. "Liz, if possible, I would like to get the rest of the candidates in today. I just don't have the convenience to keep interrupting my schedule anymore with interviews. I want to hire someone this week. I need to get them trained as soon as possible, so I can get some semblance of order back into my chaotic life."

"Kai, you hired me as the HR manager for a reason. I told you, you don't have to be here for the interviews. I can find you a good administrative assistant."

Huffing out a breath, "I know Liz, it isn't that I don't trust you, I just want to make sure there's some sort of connection with the person that I'll be working that close with."

"Alright," Liz heave out a long sigh. "I’ll stall until you get here."

Liz is amazing. I don't know what I would do without her. She stepped up and kept things running when I couldn't be in the office. I know she can find me the best assistant, but for some reason, I just need to be involved in this.

I’ve been so disorganized during the remodel; I should have started it when I first bought the place. I don't know why I decided to postpone. I don't sleep well at the hotel, and I haven’t caught up on my sleep from the other night either, which has me a little off kilter. My memory flashes back to the sad but beautiful cerulean blue eyes that for just a brief moment, looked deep inside my soul, making a hole in the wall I built to keep me safe.

Walking into the office, I glance down at my watch, I made good time, I’m only ten minutes late. I stride to the conference room. Liz isn’t in there, but the latest applicant is standing with her back to me looking out the window at the lake.
